A student at Dumfries & Galloway College has been selected as the Scottish Colleges Sport Volunteer of the Year. Eighteen year old student Georgie Boyle from Dumfries is currently studying BTEC National Award in Sport at the Dumfries Campus. She was nominated for the award by Sports lecturer Kevin Somerville for all the excellent work that she carries out in the local community Georgie has been involved in many different volunteering roles to support the young people of Dumfries, including rugby, football, multi sports, event organising and drug & alcohol awareness. She is currently involved with the Active Schools programme contributing on a weekly basis to the active schools programme, organising festivals and delivering a variety of sports sessions for primary children. Her volunteering work hasn’t always been easier and she has come across many barriers including the withdrawal of funding for projects and changes in coaching staff at clubs. This would be enough to put people off volunteering but in Georgie’s case she has moved on and found another cause to help Kevin Somerville said "Her attitude, professionalism and enthusiasm are fantastic for someone so young and she has proved to be a fantastic role model for youngsters, particularly young females. Her commitment to volunteering is all the more impressive considering she has held down two part-time jobs in local leisure facilities and excelled in her full time college course."
The nomination form was sent to Scotland’s colleges and Georgie was chosen by a selection committee whose feedback stated "You were chosen as the most outstanding example. Your commitment to sport and physical activity is truly amazing and Dumfries & Galloway is very lucky to have someone as dedicated as yourself studying at the college." She will be presented at an Awards Ceremony on 15th June at Aberdeen.
