The annual electrical installation competition was held on Tuesday 22nd June in the electrical workshops at Dumfries & Galloway College, sponsored by the Scottish Electrical Charitable Training Trust (SECTT) and Scottish Electrical Contractors Association (SELECT), who also provided the prizes.

Twenty one pre-apprentice students’ from across the region battled it out to win the title of ‘End of Session Practical Competition’. They are studying Electrical Engineering Practice a one year full time course which provides the student with background knowledge and associated practical skills in electrical installation work.

Working in competitive conditions, the task set was for them to construct, wire and connect two workable circuits commonly found in all houses; a two-way lighting circuit commonly found operating stairway lights and also a socket circuit.

After much deliberation the judges; Jeremy McDowall, Branch Chairman of SELECT Dumfries & Galloway Branch and Craig Johnston training officer for SECTT, awarded Chris Jackson 3rd, Tomasz Antoniac 2nd with the overall winner being Douglas Brotherston from Marchfield Dumfries.

Jeremy McDowell, said, "Very impressed with the dedication and work of the pre-apprentices. Any potential employer would be impressed by the excellent practical, theory and knowledge of these students."

Craig Johnston from SECCT said "Top class standard of work and I hope the students will find their way into the industry"
