Dumfries & Galloway College student Ryan Johnstone has been named West Coast Regional Champion in Electrical Installation Engineering for 2nd year apprentices, by the Scottish Electrical Charitable Training Trust (SECTT).

The annual competition took place on Thursday 17th June at Motherwell College, where both practical and theory examinations tested his skills and knowledge. Ryan was up against similar 2nd year apprentices from 7 other colleges and the competition was judged by SECCT Development Manager for Scotland Roy Dow and his training officers who reported at the award ceremony that it was extremely close between all the competitors.

Ryan will now go forward to the national final in October where he, along with the regional winners from the North and East competitions, will be interviewed by a panel of industry leaders to find the top apprentice. The panel will decide who will receive Gold, Silver and Bronze medals

Ryan is no stranger to success, winning the west coast regional and then national first year apprentice awards last year and is hoping to add the 2nd year title to his awards. An apprentice at the college and employed by The Cheese Company in Lockerbie, he started his study in 2008 and has just completed his second year. He has shown determination, commitment and enthusiasm throughout his employment and study.

Stuart Logan programme manager for Dumfries & Galloway College said "We are extremely proud of the progression he has made throughout his 2 years at college. To be successful for a second year is an excellent achievement for Ryan, the college and the Cheese Company. We wish him success for the finals in October."

Ryan is following in the footsteps of another successful Engineering student from Dumfries & Galloway College, Richard Sager who was crowned Word Skills Electrical Installation Champion in 2009.
