What is Health and Social Studies?

Career Options 

As more than 1 in 3 college leavers go on to find employment*, a qualification in care could lead to the following careers: 

  • Social workers – are caring individuals who support vulnerable people and safeguard them from harm. They work closely with communities and other health professionals to determine what is the best course of action for a person. It can often be a challenging role for social workers as they need to be patient and have the confidence to make tough decisions. Average starting salary between £24,000 – £30,000 
  • Healthcare Assistant – also known as Nurse Assistants, take care of patients on a day-to-day basis making sure they are comfortable. They are very patient people who understand and are sensitive to patients with medical problems. Healthcare Assistants can help feed, wash, dress and take blood samples of individuals for doctors and nurses. They could work in hospitals, care homes and GP surgeries. Average starting salary between £18,000 – £19,000 
  • Emergency Care Assistant – assist and provide patients with lifesaving care, supporting paramedics. They often drive ambulances safely with speed to attend accidents and emergencies. Emergency Care Assistants work well under pressure and remain calm. They will be able to record and draft reports of any incidents that may occur. Average working salary £20,000 – £21,000 
  • Adult Nurse – care for patients who are suffering from any illnesses or conditions. They support individuals with dependable care and are often the main point of contact for them. They have a lot of knowledge about the human body and illnesses using their academic knowledge along with their experience to confidently make decisions and explain to individuals what action needs to be taken. Average starting salary between £25,000- £26,000 

Onward Study 

As more than 1 in 3 college students who graduate with an HNC or above go on to university study*, a qualification in health and social care could lead you to the following degree options: 

  • Degree in Integrated Health and Social Care BA (Hons)   
  • Degree in Adult Nursing BSc 
  • Degree in Mental Health Nursing BSc

Professional Membership 

Students studying and graduates with a qualification in social care can become a member of the Scottish Social Services Council (SSSC) – regulators for the social services workforce in Scotland.  

Registration offers you:

  • Support to keep learning and boosting your skills 
  • Access to resources to keep you meeting the national standards of practice
