Applications of Mathematics NATIONAL AWARD @ SCQF Level 5

The National 5 Applications of Maths course is the study of Maths in real-life contexts. It focuses on the areas of finance, statistics, data management, measurement and geometry.

The purpose of the National 5 Applications of Mathematics course is to motivate and challenge candidates by enabling them to think through real-life situations involving mathematics and to form a plan of action based on logic. The mathematical skills within this course are underpinned by numeracy, and designed to develop candidates’ mathematical reasoning skills in areas relevant to learning, life and work.

Self-study of between 3 – 6 hours on a weekly basis

Entry Requirements

tudents would normally be expected to have attained the skills, knowledge and understanding required by the following or equivalent qualifications and/or experience:

  •    National 4 Mathematics or Applications of Mathematics

    • The course is open to applicants with no previous qualifications; however, an ability to work at National 5 level is essential.

Diagnostic test will be completed before enrolement.

Course Content

This programme comprises units in Numeracy, Finance and Statistics and Geometry.
The entire course is exam based typically in early May.

This Course provides students with opportunities to continue to acquire and develop the attributes and capabilities of the four capacities, as well as skills for learning, skills for life and skills for work.

SQA currently offer students a choice in the mathematics subject that they study.  Students who plan to go on to complete a higher in mathematics are advised to complete the ‘Pure’ National 5 Mathematics course that is offered in all schools.  However students who do not plan to have a career that involves complex numerical calculations may benefit from studying the other maths offering known as Applications of Mathematics.

This qualification is currently being accepted by the majority of universities as a valid alternative to National 5 to progress onto courses in nursing, primary teaching, social work etc.
