This is a broad, general qualification giving learners scope to develop and progress in a variety of ways within business organisations of all sizes, including ones, which learners may set up themselves.
By studying this programme, you will develop suitable competencies and industry knowledge to enhance an administrative, commercial or managerial career. You will develop other relevant skills that employer’s value such as customer handling skills, meeting deadlines, attention to detail, personal target setting, enterprise and effectively dealing with clients, managing your own performance and that of others.This award will also include a Professional Development Award in Team Leadership and Management which meets the needs of individuals who wish to develop as managers or leaders within industry.
One of the following:
- Two Highers at C or above in appropriate academic subjects or equivalent
- Successful completion of Business National Certificate at SCQF Level 6
- Successful completion of Business, Administration and IT Higher at SCQF Level 6
- Entry may still be possible for mature students depending on their prior knowledge and industry experience

Information and Interview Session Requirements
Once we have received your application you will be asked to attend an informal information and interview session. This may be virtual either through TEAMS or by phone but remember to tell us all about yourself in your personal statement!
This is a key aspect of the application process. You must confirm your attendance should you be offered an appointment.
During the information and interview session, we will ensure the entry requirements and your aspirations and career plan are appropriate for the course and the level of course you have applied for. It is therefore important that you prepare well for this.
The subjects included in the HNC may include: An Introduction to Economics and Marketing, Business communication skills as well as Business Accounting, Human Resource Management, Customer Care, Managing People and Organisations, Starting up a Business, Personal Development Planning and Research Skills.
Successful completion will allow direct entry into HND Business.Holders of a HNC may articulate onto entry of the first or second year at university depending on which university and the course concerned.
The HNC award will prepare candidates for entry to a wide range of positions including: Administration Officer; Administration Supervisor; Assistant Manager; Business Development Assistant; Customer Service Coordinator; Finance Assistant; Purchasing Officer; Planning Officer; Sales Coordinator; Team Leader or Trainee Manager.
The above positions are just some examples of a wider range of suitable posts.The programme is also ideal for learners who want to pursue a career in business but do not wish to commit themselves initially to a particular specialist area or to those who want to start their own business and require a broad grounding in business topics.
