Introduction

This course is designed to raise the candidate’s awareness of some of the most common health conditions among older people in the UK. They will explore arthritis, stroke, dementia, Parkinson’s disease, and sensory loss (both hearing and visual impairments).

Candidates will examine the signs, symptoms, risk factors and treatment options for each one. They will also look at a range of strategies – some of which they can put into practice themselves – that can help to improve the quality of life of someone living with one or a number of these conditions. It has relevance to all types of health-care settings, including care homes, hospitals and domiciliary care.

It will involve 141 hours of personal learning to complete.  Most students complete the course in 20 weeks, averaging almost 7 hours of personal learning per week.

Entry Requirements

This course is aimed at anybody who wishes to improve their knowledge and understanding of common health conditions. It will particularly appeal to individuals who have a professional or personal interest in arthritis care, stroke, dementia, Parkinson’s disease and sensory loss awareness. It will also appeal to organisations within the health and social care sector that provide support to individuals with conditions such as these. It has relevance to all types of health-care settings, including care homes, hospitals and domiciliary care.

This course comprises 6 units that are presented in 3 concise module workbooks

Module A
Unit 1 - Arthiritis awareness
Unit 2 - Stroke awareness

Module B
Unit 3- Dementia awareness
Unit 4 - Parkinsons disease awareness

Module C
Unit 5 - Sensory loss awareness
Unit 6 - Understand how to contribute to monitoring the health of individuals affected by health conditions

Assessments

Learners will be provided with all the necessary materials to complete the programme and will have the opportunity to work through a series of reflective activities designed to reinforce the learning process.  Learning materials also include an assessment to demostrate learners achievements, which is tutor marked.
