Introduction

You will develop skills and knowledge for further study for entry into a career in the Data Analytics sector.   

Data Science is one of the emerging technologies that are becoming vital for contemporary societies and has been widely reported as having a skills shortage.  This qualification provides foundation knowledge and skills in Data Science and would give you the opportunity to learn or improve your Data skills prior to pursuing a career in a wide variety of careers such as Computing, Business, Finance or Medical research.

You will learn how to use data that you have found or gathered to answer questions and to suggest changes. You will analyse data to find patterns and you will find out how to interpret graphs, charts and tables to spot important points, trends or errors.

Entry Requirements

No formal qualifications are required; however, it is desirable that students possess one of the following:

Core Skills in ICT or Numeracy at SCQF Level 4/5

National Units in Computing or Maths

Once we have received your application you will be asked to attend an informal information and interview session. This may be face to face or virtual either through TEAMS or by phone but remember to tell us all about yourself in your personal statement!


This is a key aspect of the application process. You must confirm your attendance should you be offered an appointment. 

During the information and interview session, we will ensure the entry requirements and your aspirations and career plan are appropriate for the course and the level of course you have applied for. It is therefore important that you prepare well for this.

During your information and interview session, lecturers will be scoring your suitability for a place on the course based on the following criteria on meeting the entry requirements. 

Course Content

The programme offers you the opportunity to learn Data Science, Data Citizenship and either Computer Programming, Data Security or Data Science Project.

Assessments

There is no formal exam.  You will be required to undertake continual assessments throughout the year.  These will take the form of written, oral, individual and team projects.

Progression

Completion of the course may lead to progression to Advanced Computing with E-sports at SCQF Level 6 and future study such as HNC Cyber Security or entry into the Batchelor of engineering Cyber Security degree (in partnership with UWS).

Career Prospects

It is not anticipated that this award will lead directly to employment. It is primarily designed to prepare you for further study to get a career such as a data analyst, data engineer and statistician. Data science is used in lots of areas. For example, doctors, engineers and astronomers all use data science to help them make decisions and predictions. The qualification is also good preparation for university when you will be required to analyse large datasets.
