The course has been designed to provide young learners opportunities to develop skills and knowledge for further study for entry into a career in the Data Analytics sector.    

Data Science is one of the emerging technologies that are becoming vital for contemporary societies and has been widely reported as having a skills shortage.  This qualification provides foundation knowledge and skills in Data Science and would give students the opportunity to learn or improve on their Data skills prior to pursuing a career in a wide variety of careers such as Computing, Business, Finance or Medical research.

Entry Requirements

No formal qualifications are required; however, it is desirable that students possess one of the following:

Core Skills in ICT or Numeracy at SCQF Level 4/5

National Units in Computing or Maths

Once we have received your application you will be asked to attend an informal information and interview session. This may be virtual either through TEAMS or by phone but remember to tell us all about yourself in your personal statement!

This is a key aspect of the application process. You must confirm your attendance should you be offered an appointment. 

During the information and interview session, we will ensure the entry requirements and your aspirations and career plan are appropriate for the course and the level of course you have applied for. It is therefore important that you prepare well for this.

Course Content

The programme offers learners the opportunity to attain the SQA National Progression Award in Data Science.

Units covered are Data Science, Data Citizenship and either Computer Programming, Data Security or Data Science Project.


Assessments are ongoing throughout the year


Completion of the course may lead to progression to Computing at SCQF Level 6.

Career Prospects

Through further study students could access career opportunities such as Business intelligence analyst, Data analyst, Data engineer, Data scientist, Systems analyst.

Selling Points

Data Science is used in lots of areas.  For example, Doctors, engineers and astronomers all use data science to help them make predictions and decisions.  This qualification is also good preparation for university study where you will be required to analyse large datasets.
