This course introduces learners to several areas of computing including Computer Game Design, Website Design, Computer Hardware, Computer Support, Computer Software Applications and provides a good basis to progress onto a more advanced level 6 qualification or to gain employment as a junior IT trainee. With the addition of E-sports units this will give individuals an introduction into the world of professional competitive gaming.
This programme is aimed at learners who have chosen a career in the field of Information and Communication Technology (ICT).
Several of the topics will be taught in computer labs as well as general purpose classrooms and use will be made of the College’s e-Skills lab for the technical support subjects.
The programme is aimed mainly at school leavers with the appropriate entry criteria. However, it also provides an opportunity for adult learners to study a recognised ICT qualification predominately looking at ICT Hardware and software development at SCQF level 5.The qualification has the potential to prepare learners for employment in the ICT sector and it is suitable for those who have decided to pursue the ICT Support area of work.
Attendance: Full Time 2-3 days per week
- 4 Standard Grades at 4 or above; 4 Intermediate 1 awards; 4 National 4 awards
- Successful completion of the Certificate in Computing (SCCP) course and a satisfactory internal reference;
- Entry may still be possible for mature students depending on their prior knowledge and experience.

The topics studied will include Computer Games Design and Development, Website Design, Graphics and Development, Introduction to E-sports and Plan an E-sports event.
In terms of ICT Support the learner will study and obtain hands on practical experience covering: Computer Hardware and Systems, Install and maintain Computer Software, Troubleshoot and Secure IT Systems.
Time will also be spent developing skills in software development and using IT applications in the Microsoft Office suite including Word Processing and Presentations.
Time will also be spent developing appropriate numeracy and communication skills that are paramount in today’s working ICT society.Also included in the course are two National Progression Awards in Computer Games Development and Web Design.
Completion of the programme may lead to progression to the Computing at SCQF Level 6 programme.
This programme will give learners the opportunity to develop a range of skills and techniques in software development and ICT support, as well as the personal skills and attributes essential for successful performance in working life in the field of computing.Career options would be at a trainee or entry-level post in areas such as Website Development, Computer Technician, Help Desk Technician & Support Technician.
