Reablement and Self Management: Practical Skills @ SCQF Level 6


This unit is designed specifically for those who work in the NHS. Developed in partnership with NHS Dumfries & Galloway, you should currently be employed by them in a support role such as Health Care Support Worker.  The unit is designed to help you to develop your understanding of the principles of reablement/enablement, and the other factors which may have an effect on the individual’s ability to maintain daily life skills. It will help you to develop a reablement ethos within your working role and promote an individual’s ability to self-manage. Study at this level will prepare you well for study at SCQF7/HNC should you wish to do that in 21/22





Entry Requirements

This unit is specifically designed for those who work currently within NHS Dumfries and Galloway.

You must be interacting with individuals either in hospital or in community settings.

You will need access to an input device such as a laptop for submitting reports and assessments.

The course is delivered online.  Once you are enrolled you will be given a college email which will give you access to the site and to Teams.

You must be able to set some time aside each week to study and complete assessments.

Information and Interview Session Requirements

In your application under ‘personal statement’ you should state that you are an NHS employee and where you work.

If you are considering applying to study at HNC level in 21/22 you should also state this in your statement

Course Content

Developing an understanding of enablement

Human Biology  - four of the body systems and diseases relating to those body systems

Legislation and policy which brought about the need for enabling people to live independent lives for as long as possible

Skills and qualities required by practitioners when promoting reablement


Almost all assessments are essays and reports, and all are ‘open book’ meaning you can look through the website and check any notes as you are writing them up.

After successfully completing this programme you may want to continue to study and our recommended course which aligns to Career Framework level 3 is HNC Healthcare Practice at SCQF level 7.  After HNC you may want to take your studies further and study nursing at university.
