This course is an excellent stepping stone into the motor vehicle industry.
This qualification is designed as a pre-apprentice course and covers most of the basic technical elements required within the motor vehicle repair industry.
The course provides essential knowledge for service technicians working on light vehicles (cars and vans) in all garage types.
This course is a mix of hands on practical activities and theory allowing candidates to gain technical knowledge and valuable skills required for employment in the motor vehicle industry.
You should be able to study at Intermediate 1 level or above, or have completed the Institute of the Motor Industry (IMI) Award for the Introduction to Vehicle Technology.
Entry may still be possible for mature candidates depending on prior experience and knowledge.
You will be required to attend an information and interview session before the commencement of the course.
If you are currently studying at the college, you will also require a positive progressing learner reference.

During the information and interview session, we will ensure the entry requirements and your aspirations and career plan are appropriate for the course and the level of course you have applied for. It is therefore important that you prepare well for this.
The course is structured around a selection of both knowledge and skill based practical motor vehicle engineering units together with a core skills programme, which is valued by employers involving communications, numeracy and information technology.
The course involves the study of light vehicle construction and routine maintenance, operating principles of light vehicle engines, tyres, brakes, steering and suspension systems, transmission systems and electrical and electronic systems within structured practical workshop lessons and classroom theory.
Progression to the IMI Diploma in light vehicle maintenance or Higher level full-time programmes of study or into an apprenticeship with an employer.
Employment as a Modern Apprentice in the motor vehicle industry.
