Supporting Care Experienced Young People

At Dumfries and Galloway College we seek to support all Care Experienced Young People to ensure that they have a positive and successful experience.

To achieve this we support our Care Experienced Young People by having a dedicated Student Adviser as a point of contact to help support you with issues that may arise before and during your time at college.

Before you start College we can provide support such as:

  • Transitional meeting(s) with care providers and the prospective student
  • Opportunity to visit to the College to see what we can offer you as a student
  • Student advisers can provide funding advice, before you apply
  • Support and guidance with filling out online applications for chosen course of study and funding

We also liaise with department Curriculum leaders to help support the care experienced young person, this may be related to attendance and referrals that come through where support needed can be identified and then implemented.

Whilst you are attending College there is also:

  • A specific contact that you can turn to for support
  • Support with any funding difficulties
  • Additional funding available through Hardship funds
  • Access to support regarding study skills
  • Support with attendance issues
  • Meet up throughout the year for ongoing guidance
  • Discuss how you plan to progress with your studies and offer further advice
