Introduction

Our PACE (Pathway for achievement, Confidence and Education) programme provides a self-development pathway to help participants a develop a positive approach to in their education as well as help to identify their next steps in their own learning and skills development journey.

Each cohort will be made up of about 12-15 young people aged between 16-25 years for a period of 12 weeks. By participating in vocational units this programme aims to support young people to develop their confidence, resilience, and self-esteem.

Entry Requirements

No formal academic qualifications are required. If you are aged 16-25, seeking direction and ideas for your future, this programme could be for you. The programme is designed specifically for those who are either:

  • unemployed
  • have found education difficult
  • have had youth justice or criminal justice involvement
  • or those in care or leaving care

You can self-refer for this course or contact your worker for a referral.

Information and Interview Session Requirements

This is a key aspect of the application process. You must confirm your attendance should you be offered an appointment.

During the Information and Interview Session, we will ensure the entry requirements and your aspirations and career plan are appropriate for the course and the level of course you have applied for. It is therefore important that you prepare well for this.

Course Content

The course covers SQA units in self-awareness, self in society, self in work and communication as well as additional college certificates in CV preparation, first aid, food hygiene, moving and handling, group presentation, interview skills, job applications, motivation skills, team building skills, and work placement.

This course is delivered online with campus supported sessions and placements available in Dumfries and Stranraer.

Assessments

We use a variety of appropriate assessments to support all learners. This includes a project, practical assessment, reflective account and a group task.

Progression

Completion of the course will provide participants the skills and opportunities to consider employment, further training or continuing their education.

We have a follow on course called Sustained Transitions and Routes (STAR programme) which is a 18 week programme that builds on the skills and learning from this course (at SCQF level 3/4).

There also other college programmes that may be useful consider including Moving onto Further Education, Lifeskills and Project Search.

Career Prospects

Each participant will have an individualised learning/development plan to support them in identifying their skills and potential career.

Additional funding information

If you are on Universal Credit, this should not be affected. There may be an opportunity for Education Maintenance Allowance (EMA)/Bursary , however please discuss this with student funding at sfs@dumgal.ac.uk
