Introduction

This officially recognised and accredited qualification equips learners with essential knowledge and practical skills to respond confidently to emergency paediatric first aid situations. Designed for those responsible for the care of children, it prepares individuals to handle a wide variety of incidents that may occur in early years, childcare, or educational settings.

The Qualsafe Level 3 Award in Emergency Paediatric First Aid is a nationally recognised qualification that aligns with the standards set by the Scottish Government and Care Inspectorate for early learning and childcare. It is ideally suited to:

  • Individuals who hold a SCQF Level 6 or equivalent childcare qualification, have entered into an early years setting in Scotland, and wish to be counted within staff-to-child ratios in line with regulatory requirements.

  • Parents, guardians, grandparents, or anyone involved in the care of infants and young children who want to develop key paediatric first aid skills to respond confidently to emergencies.

Please Note: This is a highly practical course, and participants must be physically able to move comfortably from standing to a floor position.

  • CPR techniques tailored for infants and young children

  • How to manage choking, bleeding, and unconsciousness

  • Assessing emergency situations quickly and effectively

  • Putting recovery positions into action

  • Safe use of first aid equipment like defibrillators (AEDs)

Entry Requirements

  • Minimum Age: Learners must be at least 14 years old on the first day of training.

  • Physical Ability: You should be able to perform practical tasks at floor level, such as CPR and recovery positions

Course Content

Designed to equip learners with the skills and confidence to respond to emergency situations involving infants and children. It includes both theoretical learning and hands-on practice.

Topics Covered

Module Description Roles & Responsibilities Understand the duties of a paediatric first aider in emergency situations. Assessing an Emergency Learn how to quickly evaluate the scene and prioritise care. Unresponsive Infant/Child Techniques for managing unconsciousness, including recovery position. CPR & AED Use Perform CPR and safely use an automated external defibrillator (AED). Choking Identify and treat choking in infants and children. Minor Injuries Treat cuts, grazes, bumps, and bruises. Bites & Stings Respond to insect bites, stings, and allergic reactions. Seizures Recognise and manage febrile and other types of seizures. External Bleeding Control bleeding and apply appropriate dressings. Shock (Hypovolaemic) Understand and manage shock caused by blood loss.
