Introduction

This course is the ideal starting point for a career in the modern business world, providing you with progression opportunities onto further study and employment. It will enable you to acquire knowledge and understanding of the role and operation of a business, to develop analytical skills, to apply skills to business situations and to enhance your communication skills.

The course can provide the incentive for you to go into a career in Business or consider the prospect of establishing your own business. The underpinning knowledge and understanding gained from the course will be a valuable resource for you to explore this route.

The course provides an excellent broad knowledge of Business, Enterprise and Business Management related&#nbsp;topics and allows students to develop their IT application skills in Microsoft Office.&#nbsp;

Entry Requirements

  • Three National 5 qualifications at Grade C or above in relevant* subjects; OR
  • NC Business or NC Administration at SCQF level 5 (other NCs may be considered); OR
  • Other equivalent qualifications or experience.

* Relevant subjects include English, Administration, Business Management, Economics, Geography, History, Mathematics, Modern Studies or a Science subject.

  • Knowledge of Microsoft packages is also required
  • Applicants whose first language is not English should have minimum ESOL Intermediate level 2 or equivalent for NC/NQ courses
  • If you are currently studying at the College, you will also require a positive Progressing Learner Reference.

Information and Interview Session Requirements

As part of the application process for this programme, all prospective students will be invited to attend a Recruitment Day. This event, which will last 2-3 hours, is designed to help you learn more about the course while allowing us to understand your skills, interests, and readiness for study.

Your Recruitment Day will include:

  • An individual task – an opportunity to demonstrate your understanding, problem-solving, and written or practical skills.
  • A group activity – designed to assess teamwork, communication, and how you work with others.
  • A one-to-one discussion with a lecturer – a short, informal conversation about your goals, your experience and why you feel this course is right for you.

Performance across all elements of the Recruitment Day will be used to determine whether an offer of a place can be made.

We aim to make the process supportive and informative, giving you a clear sense of what to expect from the course and helping ensure the programme is the right fit for your future plans.

Course Content

Throughout the course you will complete 3 National Progression Awards in Business Skills, Customer Service and Enterprise and Business. The course enables you to learn subjects such as Customer Service, Personal Development, Enterprise, Management of People and Finance, Contemporary Business Issues, Understanding Business, Marketing and Customer Care and you will have the opportunity to put your learning into practise with work experience.

Assessments

The year is divided into 3 teaching blocks, so assessment is spread evenly throughout the course. There are opportunities for re-assessment throughout the year.

Assessment methods may include individual and group projects, presentations, written assignments, and practical exercises.

There is no formal exam within the course.

Progression

Provides the entry requirements to HNC Business and a range of related courses at Higher National Certificate level. A BSc Business Degree is offered in partnership with University of West of Scotland.

Career Prospects

Employment in a business, administration or office environment at entry level.
