Mechanical Engineering HNC @ SCQF Level 7


This award is designed for individuals with acceptable qualifications or mature learners who upon completion wish to enter the engineering and service industries or the renewable energy sector at technician level. 

This programme will develop your skills, confidence and awareness of Mechanical Engineering and is a great opportunity to progress from a modern apprenticeship, level 6 course, Foundation Apprenticeship or for adult learners who wish to enhance their knowledge of the subject area or are looking for progresion in their current industry. This course will also develop your study skills as a learner.

Succesful completion of this course may allow progresion to the HND in Electrical Engineering.

Full Time, up to 3 days per week over 36 weeks in one academic year or as day release for employed candidates.

Entry Requirements

One of the following: 2 Highers (one must be a maths or physics-related higher), National Certificate Course in Engineering at SCQF level 6 or equivalent or suitable skills in a related area.

Entry may still be possible for mature students depending on prior skills and knowledge.

You will be required to attend an information and interview session with the course tutor prior to being offered a place on the course.

If you are currently studying at the college, you will also require a positive progressing learner reference.

Information and Interview Session Requirements

Once we have received your application you will be asked to attend an informal information and interview session. This may be in person, virtual either through TEAMS or by phone but remember to tell us all about yourself in your personal statement!

This is a key aspect of the application process. You must confirm your attendance should you be offered an appointment.

During the information and interview session, we will ensure the entry requirements and your aspirations and career plan are appropriate for the course and the level of course you have applied for. It is therefore important that you prepare well for this.

Course Content

This course will give you a technical grounding in Engineering Principles, Material Selection, Statics and Strength of Materials, Dynamics, Thermofluids, Pneumatics and Hydraulics, CNC, CAD for Engineers, Programmable Logic Controls and more.

The course is nationally recognised as the qualification needed by technicians working within the Mechanical sector.


Assessments will be completed by project, practical exercise, e-learning and theory assessment.


This programme is designed to articulate to a HND in Mechanical Engineering or a degree level programme or to promotion within employment.
