For the very first time all four tutors who teach art and applied arts in the Creative Industries department at the college have been selected to open their studios to the public for the twentieth anniversary of Spring Fling which takes place in artists and makers studios and galleries across Dumfries and Galloway, 2 – 5 June 2022.
Artist William Spurway took part in the very first Spring Fling and will be opening his studio as usual this year at Solway House Studios alongside mixed media artist Joanna Shennan who is participating in Spring Fling for the very first time. Ceramicist Ruth Elizabeth Jones and printmaker Emma Varley will be showing their individual work in pop up studios at Gracefield Arts centre alongside their collaborative immersive Earthlight installation combining ceramics and projected digital drawings for which they were awarded Upland’s 2022 Creative Bursary.
“As both practicing professional artists and tutors at the college, we are proud as a department to have been selected for this year’s Spring Fling”, said William. “As well as selling our own work”, Ruth commented, each of us shall also use this opportunity to show our students some of the participating studios so that they can experience at first-hand what running a creative business involves.”
A number of creative industries graduates have been accepted to open their studios for Spring Fling over the years and the event has proved an important launching pad for their businesses.
