Scottish Vocational Qualifications (SVQs) set out the skills, knowledge and attitudes which can be directly applied and assessed within the workplace. The emphasis is on day-to-day abilities and achievements rather than, as with other qualifications, the ability to recall large amounts of information for an examination.
Scottish Vocational Qualifications (SVQs)
Dumfries and Galloway College enrol in the region of 500 Work Based SVQ candidates each year in various subject areas. We have a success/completion rate averaging out at around 90%. We also have a team of qualified assessors who travel around the whole of the region assessing candidates in their workplace.
SVQ’s offer practical learning programmes that relate directly to specific job roles or industry sectors. These are nationally recognised qualifications that are based on standards that have been agreed by representatives from that industry.
A SVQ is achieved by demonstrating that the standards set out in the qualification have been met. This is achieved by using naturally occuring daily situations to assess performance. There are many forms of evidence including direct observation by the assessor, reports, testimonials from colleagues.
The timescale for completion of a SVQ varies between different qualifications and different levels. It is important that the candidate, the employer and the assessor agree the timescale and assessment plan to ensure that all are clear what the process will be and that all share responsibility for ensuring the process is successful.
