Designed for candidates who want a career in the gas industry – this course will allow Category 2 or 3 applicants for Gas Assessment to be eligible for assessment.

This course includes:

  • 40 days of classroom-based learning within a college environment, covering essential theory and technical knowledge.

  • Structured ‘on-the-job’ training, allowing candidates to apply their skills in real-world settings.

To successfully complete the course, candidates must:

  • Arrange and undertake supervised work experience with a Gas Safe registered operative – Gas Safe Registration number required for engineer and buisiness.

  • Provide documented work-based evidence demonstrating competence and progression.

  • Accumulate a minimum of 675 onsite gas hours, ensuring thorough exposure to industry practices – evidenced on On-site Portfolio.

Entry Requirements

Employment or experience in the gas/plumbing industry as an operative with the ability to gather on-site experience of gas installation and maintenance

Trainees who lack gas training and experience will need to hold a recognised qualification in the mechanical services engineering sector (e.g. plumbing), or they will have gained a minimum of 2 GCSEs (Grade C) or equivalent, preferably English, Mathematics or relevant/appropriate experience or an entry assessment.

  • A valid UK passport
  • A full or provisional UK driving licence

    Safe combustion principles and identifying combustion faults.

  • Ventilation Requirements
    Ensuring adequate ventilation for gas appliances.

  • Gas Pipework and Fittings
    Installation, bending, joining, and testing of pipework.

  • Tightness Testing and Purging
    Procedures to ensure gas systems are leak-free and safe.

  • Emergency Controls and Procedures
    Positioning and operation of emergency isolation controls.

  • Meter Regulators
    Checking and setting appliance burner pressures and gas rates.

  • Flue Systems
    Installation and testing of open, balanced, and fan-assisted flues.

  • Gas Safety Devices and Controls
    Operation and checking of safety devices on appliances.

  • Unsafe Situations and Notices
    Identification and appropriate response to unsafe conditions.

  • Re-establishing Gas Supplies
    Safe procedures for restoring gas and relighting appliances.

Progression

BPEC Gas Foundation Certificate
Enables candidates to progress to ACS assessments, which are required for Gas Safe registration.

Career Prospects

Along with the relevant industrial experience successful candidates may gain employment as a Gas Engineer.
