Introduction

The Professional Development Award (PDA) in Health and Social Care Supervision at SCQF Level 7 is designed for professionals working in supervisory roles within the social services sector. This qualification supports the development of leadership and supervisory skills required by the Scottish Social Services Council (SSSC) for registration and progression in the care sector.

Entry Requirements

This qualification is suitable for individuals who:

  • Are currently employed in a supervisory role within health or social care settings
  • Hold a relevant care-related qualification such as SVQ Level 7 or HNC Social Services
  • Require a supervisory or management qualification with a minimum of 15 credits at SCQF Level 7 to meet SSSC registration requirements

Entry is at the discretion of the centre, and applicants should be able to demonstrate the ability to work at SCQF Level 7.

Course Content

This qualification consists of two mandatory units, each designed to develop the skills and knowledge required for supervisory roles in health and social care settings. The course is delivered remotely via LearnNet, with tutor support available throughout to guide learners through content, assessment preparation, and reflective practice.

Unit 1: Health and Social Care – Supervise People (F6CX 34)

This unit focuses on the practical and professional responsibilities of supervising staff in care settings. Learners will explore:

  • The role and responsibilities of a supervisor in health and social care
  • Effective communication and leadership strategies
  • Supporting staff development and performance
  • Planning and conducting supervision sessions
  • Monitoring and evaluating staff practice
  • Managing conflict and promoting team cohesion
  • Reflective practice and professional development

Unit 2: Health and Social Care – Supervise the Protection of People (F6CW 34)

This unit addresses the supervisor’s role in safeguarding and protecting individuals in care environments. Learners will cover:

  • Legal and policy frameworks for protection and safeguarding
  • Risk assessment and management
  • Supporting staff in implementing protection procedures
  • Ethical decision-making and handling dilemmas
  • Promoting safe practice and wellbeing
  • Supervising the implementation of care plans
  • Reflecting on supervisory practice in protection contexts
