Introduction to Working with Communities PDA

Introduction

This flexible, fully online course is designed for individuals who are already working or volunteering within their community and want to develop their skills in Community Learning and Development (CLD). With a rolling start, you can begin when applications are open and study at a pace that fits around your existing commitments.

Over 18 weeks, you will explore the key principles of CLD, with a particular focus on community involvement and capacity building. The course is practical and work-based, allowing you to apply your learning directly within your community role.

On successful completion, you will achieve a Professional Development Award (PDA) at SCQF Level 6, supporting your progression into further study or enhanced opportunities within the CLD sector.

Entry Requirements

  • You must be working or volunteering within the community ideally within Youth Work, Adult Learning or within Community Development, either statutory or third sector roles.
  • Have access to a device and the internet and be willing to study online
  • Be able to check in regularly with your tutor
  • Be eligible to join the PVG (Protecting Vulnerable Groups) scheme
  • Be capable of working at SCQF Level 6 (Higher level)

Applicants whose first language is not English should have ESOL Intermediate 2 or equivalent (or Higher for HNC/D), which can be evidenced through prior study, work experience, or interview.

As this course is delivered fully online, you will need:

  • Access to a reliable device (laptop, PC, or tablet)
  • A stable internet connection
  • Basic digital skills, including the ability to use email, access online learning platforms, and upload coursework
  • The ability to participate in online communication and check in regularly with your tutor

Course Content

This course is made up of three mandatory units, designed to build your knowledge and practical skills in Community Learning and Development (CLD):

Community Learning and Development: An Introduction
You will explore the principles and values of CLD, gaining an understanding of its role in supporting individuals and communities. This unit introduces key concepts, approaches, and the importance of inclusive practice.

Community Involvement
This unit focuses on developing your ability to support and encourage community participation. You will learn how to engage with individuals and groups, promote inclusion, and contribute to community-based activities.

Community Capacity Building
You will develop skills to help strengthen communities by supporting local groups and initiatives. This includes understanding how to identify community needs, build partnerships, and support sustainable development.

Assessments

Assessment is carried out through continuous coursework rather than exams.

You will complete a range of practical, work-based tasks linked to your role in the community, allowing you to apply your learning in real-life situations. Evidence may include written responses, reflective accounts, and records of your involvement in community activities.
