Entry Requirements
This is a suitable course for learners who have achieved the fourth level of learning across the mathematics experiences and outcomes in the broad general education, or who have attained the National 4 Mathematics course, or who have equivalent qualifications or experience. This course is particularly suitable for learners who wish to develop mathematical techniques for use in further study of mathematics or other curriculum areas, or in workplaces.
Students are expected to attend weekly at the scheduled time. National 5 Mathematics is a challenging course, and participants must be prepared to dedicate the necessary time and effort to achieve success.
Candidates must have access to a suitable device for course delivery and be able to access materials through the online learning platform, LearNet. Detailed instructions on how to access the course will be provided before the start date.
Course Content
Throughout the course, students will cover key mathematical concepts, including:

Expressions & Formulae – Algebraic manipulation, factorisation, indices, and surds

Relationships – Equations, inequalities, graphs, and trigonometry

Applications – Financial mathematics, statistics, vectors, and geometry
The course is structured to ensure a balance between theoretical understanding and practical application, preparing students for the final assessment.
Assessments
Assessment will be conducted in accordance with SQA guidelines, with the final exam date to be confirmed. Successful completion of the course will lead to the SQA National 5 Mathematics qualification, opening pathways to further study or career opportunities.
This exam can be scheduled at Stranraer or Dumfries Campus, or you can request to sit the exam at an SQA Centre of your choice.
