OFTEC 50

Introduction

The OFTEC 50 course is designed for individuals looking to start a career in the oil-fired heating industry. This practical and theory-based training provides a solid foundation in domestic oil-fired installations and prepares learners for further OFTEC qualifications. It is ideal for new entrants with little or no prior experience in oil heating systems.

This course is recognised across the industry and is a stepping stone toward becoming a fully qualified oil heating engineer. Upon completion, candidates will be eligible to progress to assessments such as:

Entry Requirements

  • No formal qualifications required, but basic plumbing skills are recommended.
  • Candidates must supply written evidence confirming that they have completed relevant on-the-job oil installation and/or maintenance training to support their application for the assessments they wish to undertake. This evidence must demonstrate that they have worked alongside an OFTEC-registered business, clearly detailing the specific type, scope, and volume of work carried out in relation to the relevant OFTEC qualifications, and this must also include the business name and their OFTEC registration number., prior to booking on OFTEC 101; 105E & 600A Training and Assessment
  • A good understanding of heating systems is advantageous.

Course Content

The course combines classroom theory with hands-on practical training and covers:

Theory Modules

  • Health & Safety in oil-fired heating
  • Building Regulations (including Part L1)
  • Types of heating oil and identification
  • British Standards and industry regulations
  • Energy conservation principles

Practical Modules

  • Steel and thermoplastic oil storage tanks
  • Tank fittings and fuel feed pipework
  • Thermostatic controls, gauges, and overfill alarms
  • Oil burners and vaporising appliances
  • Boiler maintenance and commissioning
  • Ventilation and flue systems
  • Oil contamination issues and troubleshooting

Training includes work on purpose-built rigs and live equipment
