Introduction
Children naturally test the patience of parents as part of their healthy development, using these moments to practice their independence. While this can be frustrating for parents, these episodes usually pass. However, distressed behavior in children can be more prolonged and take many forms, such as anger, inattention, physical or verbal aggression, avoidance of social interaction, self-harm, or a risk of harm to themselves or others. The causes of such behavior can be varied and complex, and if left unaddressed, can contribute to further mental health issues in adolescence.
This online short course will help learners develop an understanding of the causes of distressed behavior and the most effective ways to support a child exhibiting such behavior. Additionally, learners will explore how factors such as mental health, learning disabilities, and conditions like sensory processing disorders or autism can influence a child’s behavior. Finally, the course will provide insight into how current UK legislation informs approaches to supporting children with distressed behavior.
This course is perfect for those who wish to deepen their knowledge of distressed behavior in children. It is also beneficial for anyone pursuing a career that involves understanding and managing distressed behavior, offering a foundational qualification for those with little or no prior experience in the field.

- Section 3: Understand how to mitigate distressed behaviour in children
- Section 4: Understand when physical intervention should be used and the importance of using physical intervention safely when a child is displaying distressed behaviour
Unit 3: Distressed behaviour and mental health in children
- Section 1: Understand the characteristics of mental health
- Section 2: Understand how to support children with a mental health condition displaying distressed behaviour
Unit 4: Distressed behaviour and learning disabilities in children
- Section 1: Understand the characteristics of learning disabilities
- Section 2: Understand how to support children with a learning disability displaying distressed behaviour
Unit 5: Distressed behaviour, sensory processing conditions and autism spectrum conditions in children

Assessments
This course requires the completion and passing of six tutor marked online unit assessments. Learners are allocated a course tutor who will mark assessments and are able to offer support through the online learning platform.
