Awareness of Dementia

Introduction

There are approximately 850,000 people in the United Kingdom who have some form of dementia, with numbers expected to rise above one million by 2025. This course is designed for anyone who wishes to improve their knowledge and understanding of the condition and of how to apply the principles of ‘person-centred dementia care’.

This course aims to provide candidates with an understanding of the common types of dementia and their causes. It will help learners to develop an awareness of how the actions of others can affect individuals with dementia and provides candidates with an appreciation of a person-centred approach to dementia care and support.

It will involve 72 hours of personal learning to complete. Most students complete the course in 12 weeks, averaging 6 hours of personal learning per week.

Entry Requirements

There are no specific entry requirements for this qualification. However, learners must be aged 16 or over in order to enrol on the course.

Course Content

The Award in Awareness of Dementia comprises four mandatory units.

  • Dementia awareness
  • The person-centred approach to the care and support of individuals with dementia
  • Understanding the factors that can influence communication and interaction with individuals who have dementia
  • Understand equality, diversity and inclusion in dementia care

Assessments

Learners will be provided with all necessary workbooks to complete the programme and will be required to work through a series of tasks and activities designed to reinforce the learning process and test their knowledge. The learning materials include an assessment, which allows learners to demonstrate achievement of all learning outcomes associated with each unit. Learning is done remotely, and assessments are submitted online via the college’s LearnNet learning portal.

Progression

Learners will be able to further their own continuous professional development, which may improve their career prospects, or allow them to progress on to further qualifications such as courses in health and social care or related subjects.
