Understanding End of Life Care

Introduction

The course will be ideal for health and social care workers who wish to improve their knowledge and understanding of end of life care and palliative care. It also has relevance to all types of care settings, including hospices, care homes, care in the community and primary care.

The course aims to develop the learner’s knowledge and understanding of: the different perspectives on death and dying; the aims of end of life care; the principles of person-centred care planning; the support needed to manage pain and discomfort; how dementia impacts on an individual’s end of life care; the role of the health and social care worker at the time of death; and how to appropriately support the bereaved.

It will involve 135 hours of personal learning to complete. Most students complete the course in 23 weeks, averaging almost 6 hours of personal learning per week.

Entry Requirements

There are no specific entry requirements for this qualification. However, learners must be aged 16 or over in order to enrol on the course.

Course Content

The Certificate in Principles of End of Life Care comprises three concise module workbooks which combine the following units:

  • Understand how to work in end of life care
  • Care planning in end of life care
  • Understand how to provide support to manage pain and discomfort
  • End of life care and dementia

Each unit contains activities and assessments designed to cover the specific learning outcomes.

Assessments

Learners will be provided with all necessary workbooks to complete the programme and will be required to work through a series of tasks and activities designed to reinforce the learning process and test their knowledge. The learning materials include an assessment, which allows learners to demonstrate achievement of all learning outcomes associated with each unit. Learning is done remotely, and assessments are submitted online via the college’s LearnNet learning portal.

Progression

Learners will be able to further their own continuous professional development, which may improve their career prospects, or allow them to progress on to further qualifications such as courses in health and social care or related subjects.
